Professor Toshio Koike Interviewed by NHK on Large-scale Flood Control Measures

Professor Toshio Koike serves as the chairman of a committee established under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism for the investigation of new measures against large-scale flood damage after the torrential rains in Kanto and Tohoku in September this year. He was interviewed by NHK and appeared on the Tokyo metropolitan area news on November 30. In the interview, Professor Koike said “It is necessary to shift from existing measures of preventing flood damage with embankments and other structures to a risk-management strategy of engaging in disaster prevention across society, and important to build regional resilience to flood damage while obtaining the understanding of the local people.”
