About DIAS accounts

How to change the email address for my DIAS account?

DIAS accounts are keyed to email addresses, so it is impossible to change them for systematic reasons.
If you would like to change your e-mail address, you have to register again with a new e-mail address.
https://auth.diasjp.net/account/public/en/guest/

After registering a new DIAS account and confirming your login, please delete your old account after logging in with your former one(*Note).

(See next page for deletion method.)

How to delete my DIAS account?

Please log in with the DIAS account you would like to deactivate and proceed to the “Edit Profile” screen below to delete the account (*Note).

How can I apply for a DIAS analysis environment account?

The DIAS analysis environment is available in the joint research. For more information on joint research, please refer to the following page (written in Japanese),

How to download datasets

How can I download the dataset?

Registration for a “DIAS account” is required to use the data.
You can apply for a new DIAS account at the following URL.
https://auth.diasjp.net/account/public/en/guest

Before applying, please carefully check the “DIAS Terms of Service” and “DIAS Privacy Policy”.

Some of the dataset you can download after LOGIN when you demand, you have to get permission to use by sending the application form beforehand. Please refer to the metadata page of each dataset for details. (See FAQ for XRAIN and Himawari below)

How to download the MLIT XRAIN dataset?

How to process / analyze data

Can I use my own data with the ”CMIP5 Data Viewer”?

No, it is not possible. You can use the data the DIAS prepared.

Do you provide a data conversion tool for XRAIN?

No. However, using the "XRAIN real-time rainfall information and download system," you can download the XRAIN in four formats: plain binary, CSV, and GrADS binary with the control file set (in tar.gz or zip compression).

What is the file with the extension .nc, and how do I use it?

It is a file format called netCDF, which is widely used in fields such as climate and meteorological research. Using scripting languages such as Python or tools such as GrADS and CDO, you can visualize it or convert it to other formats, such as CSV.

How do I use files with the extensions .ctl and .dat?

Those are file formats used by the analysis and visualization tool GrADS.
GrADS uses two file types: .ctl and .dat. The .dat file is the actual data in a plain binary format, and the .ctl file is a text file called a 'control file' that explains the data in the .dat file.
You can process and visualize the data by placing the corresponding .ctl and .dat files in the same folder (directory) and loading the .ctl file from GrADS.

How to publish dataset

How do I publish data on DIAS?

If you wish to publish data on DIAS, please see the ‘Data Publication from DIAS’ page and the ‘Procedures for Data Publication’ page.

Can I assign a DOI when publishing data on DIAS?

If you wishes to assign a DOI, DIAS will carry out the procedures for assigning a data DOI.

Miscellaneous

Are there any detailed manuals for JRA-55?

The "Online Resource" section on the metadata page of the JRA-55 contains links to the "JRA-55 Product Users Handbook" and other documents.

For more detailed information than in the handbook, please contact the address in the "Contact Us" section on the JRA-55 homepage.

What is "mahalo!"

DIAS has introduced the "Mahalo Button," a service that shares information on how much research data is used.

Clicking "mahalo!" will display a list of papers that use the data.

For more information, please refer to the "About the Mahalo Button" page.

Is it possible to obtain information on papers that have used the data?

Papers using data are displayed using the "Mahalo Button" service.

If you click on the "mahalo!" button displayed on the metadata page, you will see papers that use data obtained from DIAS. In addition, the results of using DIAS are published in the "DIAS Research Results List."

I want to put a link to DIAS on my website.

The DIAS top page ( https://diasjp.net ) is free to link to (no permission or reporting is required).

However, please link to the top page in general.

If you would like to link to a page other than the top page, please contact the DIAS Secretariat.

I cannot download data.

Please check the following if you cannot access the data download page.

  • Some data require permission. For details, please see the "Search and download datasets" page or each metadata page.
  • If the permission period for a dataset that requires permission has expired, it cannot be downloaded. Please apply again.
  • DIAS service may be temporarily unavailable. Please check the "operation" category in the information section.

If you cannot download data using the download script, please contact the DIAS Secretariat with the following information;

  • Information about the dataset you are trying to download (information identifying the target data, such as dataset name, directory, etc.),
  • The results of your download attempt (only some files were extracted, the files were 0 bytes, etc.),
  • Information about the script you use (whether it has been modified, specific modification information if so),
  • Command line options you gave the script when you ran it,
  • Output messages (message text or screenshots).

The download speed is slow.

There are no explicit download restrictions on the DIAS side and no restrictions at specific times. Since the bandwidth is limited, if multiple downloads are concentrated, transmission may slow down, and the session may be terminated. If the problem persists after trying the above, please contact the DIAS office with the specific situation.

  • Reduce the number of files downloaded at once
  • If you are accessing from multiple terminals simultaneously, try accessing from a single terminal

I cannot open the desired page even if I click on the URL in the notification email from DIAS.

Are you using a function that automatically converts URLs to secure ones as part of your email system's secure settings? For example, we have confirmed that in cases where URLs in emails are rewritten to include domain names such as "sakelinks" or "urldefense", it may not be possible to access DIAS correctly.
As we cannot treat that situation, please consider setting your email system so as not to restrict connections to DIAS (the *.diasjp.net domain) or access the site by guessing and extracting the original URL part from the rewritten URL. If you contact the DIAS Secretariat, it may be possible to confirm the original URL.

Troubleshooting

There are some missings in the dataset.

Please contact the DIAS Secretariat Support Desk ( dias-office[at]diasjp.net ) with the following information; ([at]→@)
・Name of the dataset (directory)
・Information of the missing part (e.g., date, etc.)
NOTE: Some data cannot be restored due to the circumstances of the data providers.

Why can’t I download the dataset?

Please check the following conditions:

  • -There is the data that requires a usage license. For details, please refer to “User Guide” and the metadata page of each dataset.
  • -In case a dataset requires a license, you will not be able to download it if the usage deadline has expired. Please apply it again.
  • -DIAS may be suspended for an irregular period. Please check the “News” to see whether you are currently in that period or not.

If you are unable to download the data using the download script, please contact the DIAS Secretariat Support Desk ( dias-office[at]diasjp.net ) with the following information to the best of your knowledge.([at]→@)

  • -Information on the data set you are trying to download
(e.g. Data set name, directory, and other information that identifies the target data)
  • -Result of the download experiment
(e.g. Only some files were extracted, files are 0 bytes, etc.)
  • -Information on downloaded scripts.
(e.g. Whether or not there is a change. (If you have made changes, please give us specific information)
  • -Command-line options are given to the script at runtime.
  • -Output messages (e.g. message text or screenshots)

Downloading data speed is too slow.

There is no explicit limitation on the DIAS side.
We don’t put any periodic network load to DIAS systems.

Because of limited bandwidth, a high concentration of multiple downloads may cause a delay in the transfer, resulting in a loss of session time.

Please try them below:

  • -Reduce the number of files downloaded at one time.
  • -If you are accessing multiple terminals at the same time, use only one terminal.

If the problem isn’t solved after trying, please contact the DIAS Secretariat Support Desk ( dias-office[at]diasjp.net ) with the specific situation. ([at]→@)
